The Lower Mustang Jeep Safari takes you across Nepal’s diverse landscapes in a short duration. On this 9-day trip, you will traverse from the warm valleys of Kathmandu and Pokhara up through the Kali Gandaki River valley, between the massive peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. As you gain elevation, witness the green forests gradually turn into the dry, wind-swept hills that look a lot like Tibet.
The 9-day Lower Mustang adventure is a mix of driving days and village excursions. Along the way, you can stop at the hot springs in Tatopani, see the Rupse Waterfall, and walk through the stone alleyways of Marpha, a village famous for its apple orchards and local Thakali stone houses. Further up, we visit Kagbeni, the old trading post at the edge of Upper Mustang, before heading up to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath.
While the road from Kathmandu to Pokhara is paved, the route past Beni and into the mountains is rough, rocky, and unpaved. Traveling by jeep lets you visit these high-altitude villages and see the mountain views without the physical strain of a multi-day trek.
Adventure Trek in Himalaya coordinates the necessary local permits, experienced drivers, and comfortable accommodations along the route to ensure a well-planned journey.

Why Go on the Lower Mustang Jeep Safari?
Taking a jeep through Lower Mustang is a practical option if you want to see the high Himalayas up close without doing a long, demanding trek. It gets you right into the mountains with very little physical strain. Here is what makes the trip worth considering.
Rapid Landscape Change: The drive shows you a rapid shift in geography. Within a day, you go from the warm, green farmlands of the lower hills into the dry, desert-like rain shadow of the Himalayas. Watching the forests disappear and give way to bare, crumbling cliffs is one of the most interesting parts of the drive.
A Mix of Cultural Traditions: Lower Mustang is where different worlds meet. At the temple of Muktinath, you will see both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims performing rituals side by side. Down in the villages of Marpha and Kagbeni, you can explore traditional flat-roofed mud houses, ancient monasteries, and narrow stone lanes that feel untouched by time.
Local Thakali Food and Cultural Immersion: The Kali Gandaki region is the home of the Thakali people, who are famous across Nepal for making some of the best traditional meals. Staying in local guesthouses gives you a chance to eat authentic, home-cooked dal bhat made with local buckwheat, seasonal vegetables, and mountain spices and immerse yourself in the distinct Thakali culture.
Mountain Views from the Road: You do not need to hike for days to get a good view of the peaks. Throughout the drive, mountains like Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Annapurna South are visible right from the jeep window and from the guesthouses where we stop for the night.
Typical Day during the Lower Mustang Jeep Safari
The Lower Mustang Jeep Safari starts with an early breakfast around 7:00 AM, with the jeep ready to depart by 8:00 AM. Starting early is important, as strong winds pick up in the Kali Gandaki valley in the afternoon.
The temperature shifts quite a bit as the road climbs and descends, so keeping a fleece or a windbreaker handy in the back seat is much better than packing it away in your main luggage. You will want to layer up and down throughout the day.
The tour will pull over at roadside teahouses for lunch. These are simple local spots where you can get a hot plate of dal bhat or some noodle soup. Since the mountain roads are rough, we suggest keeping some snacks and water bottles in your daypack next to you.
Your guide will try to wrap up the driving by mid-afternoon. This gives you the late afternoon to stretch your legs, walk around the local villages, visit the monasteries, or just rest before it gets dark.
In the evening, everyone gathers in the main dining room of the guesthouse. These rooms usually have a central heater to keep the room warm while you have dinner and chat with other travelers.
Lower Mustang Jeep Safari: Cost for Logistics and Permits
Operating a successful tour in this region requires securing several permits. Travelers must have the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and the Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. Jeep maintenance, fuel, and experienced drivers represent a significant portion of the tour cost. Booking with a registered agency ensures these administrative tasks and vehicle standards are managed properly.
